A matchbox you keep, not one you throw away.

Most matchboxes are packaging. This one is built like a miniature trinket box: sturdy paper and wood, 4 x 6 x 1 inches, made to be refilled and left out where you can see it. It holds 100 four-inch safety matches with a striker along the side of the box, long enough for candles, a fireplace, or the back of a stubborn wick. It opens with a little intention, which is most of the pleasure of it. Over time it stops being about lighting a candle and becomes the ritual of reaching for something worth saving.

The picnic pattern is composed of hand-painted green gouache shapes, and it reads like a swatch of vintage wallpaper. Timeless and a little playful at once, which is why we absolutely adore them. Made by Marlene Printhouse in the United States.

How To Use

  • Strike along the side of the box, away from yourself.
  • Keep it out where you'll use it. The pattern is meant to be seen.
  • Refill it with four-inch matches when it's empty. The box will outlast many boxes of them.
  • Store somewhere dry, and out of reach of children.
