Watercolor horses on plum or chartreuse, with 100 matches inside.
Most matchboxes are packaging. This one is built like a miniature trinket box: sturdy paper and wood, 4.5 x 6.5 x 1 inches, made to be refilled and left out where you can see it. It holds 100 four-inch safety matches with a striker along the side, long enough for candles, a fireplace, or the back of a stubborn wick. It opens with a little intention, which is most of the pleasure of it. Over time it stops being about lighting a candle and becomes the ritual of reaching for something worth saving.
Watercolor horses prance across a rich plum or yellow-green ground, warm and cheerful and a little bit silly. We are especially fond of the playful pony. The deep color and the small details make it a good-looking thing to leave on a mantel, and it also comes in our picnic pattern. Made by Marlene Printhouse in the United States.

Why We Chose It
We chose this because it takes something genuinely disposable and makes it worth keeping. The pattern is painted by hand, the box is built to be refilled, and the whole thing quietly argues that the small objects you reach for every day deserve as much care as the large ones.
