Japanese Flower Frog
Japanese Flower Frog (Kenzan)
A simple tool that transforms the way you arrange flowers.
This traditional Japanese kenzan—often called a flower frog—allows you to create natural, sculptural arrangements without relying on the narrow opening of a vase. Instead, stems are gently secured on the bed of brass pins, giving each flower the freedom to stand, lean, and move with intention.
In the spirit of ikebana—which translates to “living flowers”—the Japanese art of flower arranging focuses on honoring the natural beauty of each stem. Rather than creating dense bouquets, ikebana encourages space, balance, and thoughtful placement, allowing flowers, branches, and foliage to feel expressive and alive.
Why We Chose This
At Three Bales, we’re drawn to tools that quietly elevate everyday rituals. This traditional Japanese flower frog does exactly that—transforming a few stems from the garden or farmers market into something intentional and beautiful.
Unlike floral foam or tightly packed bouquets, a kenzan allows each stem to stand on its own. The result feels natural, sculptural, and deeply calming to arrange. It’s a small object with surprising longevity—simple, durable, and used for generations in Japanese flower arranging.
Crafted with durable brass pins set into a stainless steel base and wrapped in a protective rubber ring, the weight of the frog keeps it anchored in the water while you arrange. Simply place it in a bowl, low vase, or shallow vessel, press stems onto the pins, and allow the flowers to take their natural form.
We especially love how it invites you to work with whatever the season offers—a branch of spring blossom, a few wildflowers gathered on a walk, or the last blooms from the garden.
