Mountain Maple Soft Maple Cutting Boards
Handmade in Missoula by Travis Orr, Mountain Maple Woodworks
There is a quiet beauty in tools made close to home — especially those crafted with daily use in mind. These soft maple cutting boards are handmade in Missoula by local woodworker Travis Orr of Mountain Maple Woodworks and designed for the kind of everyday cooking that asks for reliability, not excess.
Travis intentionally uses soft maple, a hardwood long favored in Japanese kitchens for its ability to help preserve knife edges. Slightly more forgiving than harder woods like walnut- soft maple offers a gentle surface that supports both your knives and your daily rhythm in the kitchen.
Each board is finished with a nourishing blend of beeswax and coconut oil, bringing out the natural grain while providing a food-safe, low-maintenance finish that ages gracefully with use.
A thoughtful detail we especially love: a subtle chamfered edge on the underside, allowing the board to lift easily from the countertop — almost like built-in handles. Lightweight and easy to maneuver, these boards are ideal for everyday use, offering a practical alternative to heavier butcher-block styles.
Available in two versatile sizes:
- Medium (13 x 9 inches): Perfect for car camping, morning toast and fruit, quick lunches, and smaller prep tasks
- Large (18 x 12 inches): Ideal for full meal preparation — from breaking down a whole chicken to slicing generous vegetables and proteins
Durable, lightweight, and made just miles from our shop, these are the kind of cutting boards you reach for every single day — thoughtfully crafted, quietly beautiful, and built to serve your kitchen for years to come.
